Setting intensity levels on patched dimmers
I am trying to set an intensity level on a patched dimmer so it will act as an on/off function to power a moving head. On some consoles this is done by parking the dimmer at 100%. I can assign an always on curve to the dimmer but it would be good to know if there was another way of doing it.

Here is another approach which also works on older classic desks (and on newer ones, too): patch it as generic LTP, possibly onto a handle you're not likely accessing by accident. LTP has the charme to survive a set level even when the masters are lowered or Clear is pressed. Already used this trick on a R96 desk, and used a colour changer personality.
Of course your no.1 candidate would be Generic Relay (which is LTP as well).

What I do is patch the dimmer on the second page of fixtures and then I invert the dimmer. This way the dimmer powers up as soon as the board comes on. I can use the GM without worry.
Now, just to be pedantic, I put a relay module in to the rack in the dimmer slot that I am using (ETC Sensor install racks) so that I am not using a dimmer to power a moving light. Electronics do not like dimmers even when they are outputting at full.
Take care,
John
