Titan email to upgrade

Postby Danzig4u » 15 May 2014, 17:43

I got an email today that i needed to upgrade to titan 7.4 or 7.5, because 7.2 is time sensitive. I currently am using 7.2 because I can still use the dmx ports on the classic side of the software. I work in a venue that I acts coming in, ask for the classic software and some that ask for the titan software. As I understand it 7.4 takes away the capability to send signal through the dmx ports, in classic, and reserves them for the titan software. I had upgraded then had to downgrade to it so I can still use the ports on the classic side, with out spending money on another piece of equipment, TitanNet . So if the software will stop working for me In about 50 days, how do I still be able to run dmx through the dmx ports?

Is it very unfriendly of me to think "Well, there's Titan, they should work with Titan. A venue should not have a buy new equipment because of the few that only want to work on Classic"

I have never had anyone ask for that, many want the Expert's wing disabled, but haven't gotten the Classic question.

So I was wondering if anybody has an answer to my question of "if the software will stop working for me In about 50 days, how do I still be able to run dmx through the dmx ports"

I know that titan is all the rage and that you can do so much more with it, but some of the "more experienced" (older) LDs refuse to change over to the new software (we deal with older acts). Or they have there show saved in the classic software and want to just add in my movers (ya know, time saver). I am just trying to be accommodating. If anyone knows how to prolong or cancel the self destruct timer so I can still offer the classic software to those who want it, it would be a life saver.

Thanks

I was under the impression your query had been resolved. Did no one from Avolites contact you about this?

No, I have not been contacted by anyone. Besides the email telling me that I need to switch.

Can you double check what Titan version you are currently running? You are correct that the physical DMX outputs do not work in Classic mode in the latest versions of Titan however this has been the case since Titan v6.2 when updates were done to accommodate the Pearl Expert Pro. You can still out Art-Net in Classic mode if that is any use to you.

I am using V.7.2. It still allows you to send signal via Dmx. The next version would not let me use the DMX ports, so I had to downgrade. I am trying to not buy an additional piece of equipment just to run the classic version. I don't think I have to, just to run the same software I have been running and still be able to offer Titan for those who want it.

Has there been any progress on getting me an answer on this?

The timer is still ticking on the software and I am just wondering how to handle it.

Thanks.

V6.0 is the last version to support DMX output in classic through the physical ports.

This one reason we are still on 6.2, I wanted the choice to stay with a version rather than being forced into having to change to the 'latest' bugs and all update.
I have the same problem with Titan mobile we have shows that were done it ver 6 for our clients but we dare not turn up at the venue with the latest software in case there is a problem with opening these shows in new versions or that that introduces bugs. The Licence Token in latest version also limits us to using a specific laptop with the mobile so you might as well use a tiger touch
Avolites please give your customers the option to stay in the the 7.0- 7.3. I know this timer was introduced to combat the copyright problems at the time but its now redundant as we are in the Licence Token.
All that is required is a patch to kill the timer problem fixed, I would gladly email you my ser no. to get one

I understand that V6.0 is the last version to support DMX output in classic through the physical ports, but the fact of the matter is that V.7.2 will still alow you to send the dmx signal through the ports. All I am asking is that I won't have to convince the powers to be that I need to by a separate piece of hardware to accommodate the Lighting Designers that come through my venue and want to run their shows using the classic software and accommodate the more savvy ones that switched over to the titan software . If I re install the operating system will that reset the clock? I have all my shows saved and the people that come through will have their shows that they can load in to the console. We bought our expert when it first came out. I had to convince my venue to buy it and convince them to rent when I was having the hardware installed. I really don't want to have to go back and tell them we have to spend more money on it.

I've been thinking about this a bit more. Obviously I understand your issue and ultimately the questions you are asking and whether or not there is the solution you require is up to someone else. I've already pushed this as far as I can so it's out of my hands now.

But I keep thinking that this is the wrong approach in the long term. In order to service these few clients who still want to use Classic you will be compromising yourself and any other users who want to use Titan by not providing any of the new functions and bug fixes. As time goes on this will just become a bigger and bigger gap. We're getting close to version 8.0 now and shows are not backwards compatible, so anyone coming in with Titan showfiles won't be able to use them. Surely these number of users would soon, if not already, outweigh the users with Classic showfiles?

I write this all from the perspective of a technical manager across a group of venues. In the six years I have been running Titan in my venues I have not had anyone require Classic. But if someone did I would be quite confident in saying 'sorry, but we are unable to support that any longer'. However, I realise you may have some important clients that you need to keep happy. In which case, how many universes do you need? Art-Net to DMX is not necessarily all that expensive if you only need one or two universes. For that small expense you can keep this minority happy until they finally realise what they are missing out on and otherwise keep up-to-date with all the features, fixes and ensure all your Titan users can load their files.
