Here is another approach which also works on older classic desks (and on newer ones, too): patch it as generic LTP, possibly onto a handle you're not likely accessing by accident. LTP has the charme to survive a set level even when the masters are lowered or Clear is pressed. Already used this trick on a R96 desk, and used a colour changer personality.

But if you need the fader to behave as relay, you'd need to use a relay curve (and the dimmer would still be HTP...)
