replacing fixture profiles on an Azure 2k

Is there a way I can replace a fixture profile and not affect any of the programs?

For instance, I'd like to replace the Color Blast 12 profiles with a modified one and have all my programs still work [about] the same. Do I just cut the profile and patch the new on in the same DMX channels?

It depends what you have changed. Try patching one instance of the new version somewhere. It may or may not work but that's the only trick I'm aware of. Deleting any fixture will definitely wipe programming.
