Just to follow up; a new LCD monitor with proper resolutions didn't do the trick for me. It helped a bit, but didn't entirely fix the problem.

Finally, Nick was kind enough as to replace the motherboard with a new one, that did it. But hardware troubles should be the last place you look, this was really an exception as far as I'm concerned.
