Modifying a Personality

Postby watty » 10 Nov 2017, 10:55

I have a show containing some ACME LED MS700PE fixtures. I have noticed that the personality refers to the colours as Colour 1, Colour 2 etc. and that is what appears on the soft wheels. This would be because that is the only information in the manual for theses fixtures.

I have colour pallets set up for these so no big problem. I decided I would modify the personality and name the colours. This has created a "user" version of the personality. When carrying out the change and saving, the system asked if I wanted to save the changes to the show file and I clicked yes. When I have the attributes for these fixtures on the wheels, they still say Colour 1 etc. When I check the user version of the personality it has the colour names as saved in the field for text shown in Titan.

Why would these changes not be appearing on the soft wheels??

I think there are some issues here.

Assuming I have no custom (user) personality in the custom personalities folder and patch one of the factory instances, editing seems to work ok for me. But if I then try and edit a second time it doesn't take. Also, it would appear to load the custom one regardless of which option you select to edit. I think the latter is due to it loading from the show rather than the library.

Regardless, if possible my advice would be to revert to a show version prior to any editing and avoid using cusom personalities by editing the main library directly instead (ie. load the factory file into personality builder, adjust, save and then use the update personality function). I would suggest deleting the version in the custom folder at the same time in case it interferes somehow. Alternatively you could try using fixture exchange to force an update.

If you can let me know the colours I will update the factory file. Preferably using a personality request via the form on the website so I can track it.

Thanks Nick for the response. I have had all sorts of strange things happening and thought I was doing something wrong so did not go into all the various anomalies. I did eventually start with a re-loaded "clean" show and it is from that stage that my previous question originates. At one stage I had two different pallet colours turning on the same colour - i.e. Blue turning on orange and orange turning on orange. I also got to a stage where I could no longer edit the personality without going back to previous shows. This was after amending the personality. After reverting back to an earlier show, everything is good again with the colours referred to as Colour 1 etc. I will send in the request for the colour addition as suggested.

I assume the only potential problem with amending the factory file is that it could be overwritten by a newer show file that may come from Avolites in the future?

Thanks for all the help. I am not that competent with the Titan software so when things are not working correctly I am never sure if it is me or a bug in the software. Exhaustive testing is then normally the only way to find out.

You are correct that the danger of modifying the factory file (or generally placing any custom personalities in the factory folder) is that they would get wiped when you update the library which is why there is a custom folder. However, once personalities are patched they are stored in the showfile and so cannot be affected by changes to the library unless you explicitly invoke it (ie. via the update personality function).

Ultimately updating the factory personality is the best solution in this sort of situation - not only does it become permanent and available on any console (assuming it's up-to-date) but the improvements become available for other customers.

As for the colour palettes my instincts are this is a programming error. If it's something that you want to pursue I would suggest starting a new thread so things don't get confusing.

I see why you think the colour palettes issue might be programming, however this happened on an existing show which was working fine until I modified the colour descriptions. When I reverted to the original show (deleting the custom personality before loading the new show) it worked fine again until I tried again to change the colour descriptions and then the two palette colours once again both triggered the same colour. As I said, it all got a bit messy so hopefully a clean start will resolve the issue. The show file I am using was imported from Titan One 9.1. If I can replicate the problem in a new show in Titan Mobile 10.1 (hopefully not), I will report it in another post.
