MIDI to USB lead Pearl 2000/2004

Postby sandys » 15 Feb 2012, 23:15

Hi, just finding my way round the Pearl.
Keen to use the visualiser from the desk to PC but not up on connections. Is it possible to just use a MIDI to USB cable and omit the rs232 part of the hook up? Something like this? http://www.amazon.co.uk/Adapter-USB-to-Midi-In-Out/dp/B000XRI3CC

Thank you

There is a slight chance it might work, but odds are aginst it. It depends from the drivers and how the cable is wired internally, and you won't find any data about this.

The Avo MIDI-Serial cable is merely a hardwired converter of some leads which happen to be fed through the MIDI ports, to a serial port. Except from the actual plugs, there is absolutely no MIDI in it - and on the Visualiser side, the driver must emulate a serial port.

Thank you. My PC/Laptop has no serial port, is it possible then to convert the MIDI-Serial lead to Serial-USB?

Yes. Using a serial-usb adapter works. I believe the official recommended (ie. tested) option is the Lindy adapter. The general findings suggest some of the cheaper offerings can be less reliable.

You might also have to mess around a bit to find out which com port the usb port is equivalent to but this shouldn't be too hard.

Please note that this requires ACDI which does not work on Win 7 64bit.
