change the default "center" for a fixture

Postby your_highness » 19 Jul 2008, 23:09

I just bought 2 elation design spot 250's and hooked them up to my pearl 2000. The fixtures are truss hung, with the front facing front of house.

When I go to ML Menu -> Locate Fixture, they go to the neutral position pointing straight down as expected.
Changing the tilt, I then expect them to swing straight forward or backwards, along the line from back of house to front of house.

For some reason though, they tilt up in a roughly 30 degree angle to the side. So without ever touching the pan, they don't tilt up towards me, but off to the sidewall.

So I am wondering if there is a way to adjust the neutral position for the light on the pearl?

Or is there normally an adjustment setting for this on the light itself?

I should note that if I pan all the way to the left they both eventually reach a point towards the center, but panning all the way to the right only reaches about 30 degrees away from center.

The locate values are defined in personality file ("on value") and are currently set at the standard 128 (ie 50% pan/tilt).

I guess this 50% could be wrong for the given pan range. You could either edit the personality file to your preference or just program around it and ignore. That might include simply recording a palette for pan centre instead.

It sounds strange that this would not be updated in the avo personality files, or maybe I'm one of the few with these lights and nobody else noticed?

Im also confused with the fact that they seem to have a offset pan range, as described previously, where they go further to one side than the other.

I might just check if they physically move the same range, or if they both are "screwed on" wrong, although that sounds almost unbelievable.

I am not to excited about having to enter a palette every time I program, assuming that it would need to be applied after every time you clear the programmer.

I will search the forums for some good info on how to edit the personality file. I'm just hoping it will fix the problem, not just a symptom, if you know what I mean.

One thing I realize, is that the light has a user switchable pan range (630°and 540°).

If the personality file was created for one or the other, it may be the cause of this. I will try to play with this tomorrow when I get back to the venue, and see if that affects it in any way

Thanks for your comments and response, guys. Great forum.

Like any controller all the console does is send out data 0-255 for each channel. There is nothing that could define where a fixture starts or ends it's pan. That is entirely determined by the fixture itself.
If both your fixtures do the same thing then it would be fair to assume they are calibrated correctly and it is normal.

The locate values currently just tell it to go to 50% pan and tilt (for position), but they're only for convenience to give a quick starting point etc. There's no reason why you have to use them.
If you really do want the locate to be different then edit the file and if you're absolutely certain it is currently wrong (ie. not fixture fault or rigging error) then you can submit a bug report in the personality library.

For information on personality files see the manual.

I ended up doing a factory reset on the lights, and that fixed the issue. Although brand new out of the box, they still needed that to calibrate properly.

This ended up being off-topic for this forum, sorry for that.
