ACW USB Service not running!

Having what appears to be a pretty traditional problem with a Titan Mobile + Wing - after attempting to upgrade to Titan PC Suite v15 (without uninstalling first), the console no longer talks to the computer.
Drivers are all installed and working as far as I can tell, but in USB Expert Console the TM is showing that it needs an update. When I hit Update Now, after a minute I get a
"Panel update has failed! Please resolve the problem and try again?"
The thing I notice about USB Expert is that "ACW USB service not running!" is always showing in the corner, even when I manually "Start" ACW USB. It starts long enough to make Mobile DMX and Titan Mobile Panel 1 show up but then continues not running.
Am I right in thinking the core problem is ACW USB? I'm gonna limp through tonight's show with a mouse but am I right that the next phase of troubleshooting should be a full uninstall and reinstall?
