Nested palette in cue list

Hi
I have a simple shape palette that has intensity in the mask, but the only way I can seem to get it to nest in the cue list is after I've recorded it in the Cue List I have to go back to the palette, make a change and then record > select cue list > update.
After this in cue view i can see the attribute has the Palette Name (Value). But I don't do the UPDATE then it just shows a fixed value.
Probably doing something wrong so If someone could clear up the correct process that would be great.
