Running V10 show on older software version

Postby jasontaylormedia » 28 Jul 2017, 23:20

So here's the deal: I work with a ministry that provides a Pearl Expert for a small concert type of event. I'm not sure what version is running on their console. I am thinking V9.

I have been programming the show on V10 via the simulator.

How will the console respond to my V10 if it's on 9...8...7???

Will it "gracefully fail" as in certain features will not work...or is all my work wasted? lol

Unfortunately shows are not backwards compatible. Perhaps it might be possible to update the console?

That is what I am checking in to! I read somewhere that the internal computer would need to be replaced to support 10....if it's running 9, should it be ready for 10? In other words, can the current version give a better clue as to whether it's ready or not...

Yes it's true the 'original' (Non-pro) Experts and Tiger Touches wont run V10+ (see https://www.avolites.com/Portals/0/Down ... sV10.1.pdf)

They might need a hardware upgrade depending on how old it is.

As far as I am aware there is no way to tell from the current software version whether the hardware is compatible with v10 but as a general rule of thumb if it's a black console it will need a new motherboard, RAM, UPS and probably SSD. If it's a white 'Pro' model it will probably only need the RAM.

A good indication of whether a console (Tiger Touch or Pearl Expert) has had the Pro upgrade is to check the number of Ethernet ports on the back. The old motherboard which is not compatible with v10 onwards only had a single Ethernet port, the newer motherboards have two. The other items are more difficult to tell, all Pro upgrades should have been supplied with a UPS board even if they did not have a UPS power supply however not all were fitted.

Consoles produced from about three years ago onwards were capable of running v10.0 when they left the factory. For Pearl Expert consoles that would have been from serial number PEXP-02241 however previous consoles have already been upgraded to the required specification.

Thanks for the info! This console is like 3 hours away from me so I'm at the mercy of someone else's schedule. When they have a moment, they'll tell me what specs it has. I think there were 2 ethernet ports...so 4 gigs of ram and ssd and it should be ready... Are there any directions on how to upgrade it? Or is it pretty straightforward?

On an unrelated note. This console froze up twice at an event. The faders all stopped responding..I had to reboot the entire thing...any ideas what that was all about? Maybe I should just have a quartz rented for this upcoming gig! haha

You can find upgrade instructions in the release notes (link provided by Mark above).

Console freezing could be a number of things. Can you get log files from the console?

I was sooooo wrong about the console! It's black, one ethernet port, and no ssd. It appears to be running V3.1...does anyone know how much a "pro upgrade kit" is?

Probably the best option is to contact your local distributor for pricing.

Have you checked the version number installed (turning key to system or pressing Avo+Disk)? It is possible that the software on the console has been updated and the old recovery disk has been left inside.
