BUG: prl2004v1.2 sytem - diagnostics

Postby CoenCo » 28 Mar 2006, 18:30

IN system\utility\diagnostic screen
The counter for the attribute wheels keeps resetting to 0, thus making a decent test impossible. This error has been introduced right around the time you introduced the different wheel-speed modes.

Is this not correct? The encoders only detect movement and direction, not position. Thus the only time a value is displayed is whilst moving with indication of speed and direction.

well. it's different than it used to be...
in the 2000 software each degree of turning would result in an increment or decrement. IE turning right 1 full rotation is ADD 360 to counter, turning another 9 full rotations right would set the counter to 3600. turning left then full rotations would decrement all the way back to 0.
With this system its really easy to see if the encoders skip steps, change direction or whatever.

with the new system (direction + speed) the values disappear too quickly to give an accurate readout.

....
from a quick functional test it's not a problem, you can see it works, but part of my business is to advise people when buying 2ndhand equipment. With the new system I can't judge the quality of the encoders anymore. All I can say now is that it feels OK and seems to be working.

hehe! Actually I like most of your FR's, but I try to avoid turning the sticky into a discussion. You said exactly what I was thinking regarding the Dimmer OFF idea and it is difficult to know what is what in the LCD. I had a simlar idea of inverting (display colours) the values of selected fixtures.

As soon as I get a spare moment I am going to rationalise the FR thread. A spring clean you might say!

I am afraid that this is correct. In the new Pearl 2004 software the wheels only record velocity and not position. So the diagnostics screen is displaying the velocity of the wheel and not the position.

This is all explained in the release notes for version 1.

You lose :)
