I had a tourhazer2 for a while ago during a show. The issue I'd notice was that when I fired the execute button and than released it the tourhazer2 kept blowing smoke continiously. I was forced to release it in the programmer. What could have gone wrong?

You didn't do anything wrong, that's standard behaviour since the control channels are LTP.

Personally I prefer to patch a hazer as dimmer channels. Another option would be to patch it as fixture (what you did), program a cue, and set it to mode 2 (LTP fade).
