Expert Pro - Time/Date, Wing, Activation

Hello all.

Booted up my console today at a festival show and health check showed that the time and date was off. Turns out by about 4 years - it had spontaneously set itself to sometime in 2010. This by itself shouldn't indicate any issue other than some weird time reset.

That being said, I was then prompted for activation and license code. Which, by itself is a minor inconvenience. At a festival with no internet, slightly more of an issue.

Let's compound this with my Expert Wing, which now all of a sudden looks like the attached picture. Forget about using it to run anything. It was nearly impossible just to navigate the unreadable text to scroll through to temp activation

Hopefully tomorrow I have some solid internet. I can run the desk now with temp license to get through, and with other external monitor (resolution still screwy on that, and auto adjusting, but may be the monitor I was using)

Anyone have any tips on getting back up and running? I really like having the wing.

Side note, this all worked fine last three days.

Your BIOS battery is flat so the BIOS settings have all reset to defaults. You will need to replace the battery, apply the correct BIOS settings and run a recovery disk. You should find that your original license will still work after the recovery.

I'll have to contact the rental company for the original license code. I don't mind going through the procedure fully so I know. I have a console that I need to update at home as well. Can I re-license a desk that has been already licensed with a different code, or will I get the same one sent to me? My personal console is running v5 still, so I'm a bit behind the times on it.

Are the bios settings listed somewhere? I suppose you probably can't tell me which battery it needs without knowing the motherboard. Hopefully it's something I can locate in Croatia.

You know, I didn't even look, but I suppose it's possible that the battery may have simply come loose.

Thanks for the info. I'll let you know how it turns out.

Hi Brian,

You can find the BIOS settings for the Expert in the Titan V6 upgrade guide

4.3 Configuring the new BIOS
The next steps are required to correctly configure the new BIOS. An external screen will be required.
PLEASE TAKE EXTREME CARE TO CONFIGURE THE BIOS CORRECTLY. FAILURE TO DO THIS WILL REDUCE THE RELIABILITY OF THE CONSOLE.
1. Start-up console and enter the BIOS again by pressing the [Delete] Key.
2. Once in the BIOS, use the arrow keys to select the “Load Optimized
Defaults” menu then press [Enter] followed by [Y] and then press [Enter]
to confirm.
3. Use the arrow keys to select the “Set Supervisor Password” menu and
press [Enter], type in “68340” when prompted followed by [Enter] then
confirm the password and press [Enter]
4. Use the arrow keys to select the “Set User Password” menu and press
[Enter] , type in “68340” when prompted followed by [Enter] then confirm
the password and press [Enter]
5. Use the arrow keys to select the “Standard CMOS Features” Menu and
press [Enter]
6. Set the correct “Date and Time”,
7. Set “Drive A” to: None,
8. Set “Halt on” to: All, But Keyboard
9. Press Exit then Select “Advanced BIOS features”
10.Set the “First Boot Device” to: Hard Disk
11.Set the “Second Boot Device” to: Disabled
12.Set the “Third Boot Device” to: Disabled
13.Set the “Boot Other Device” to: Disabled
14.Set “Swap Floppy Drive” to: Disabled
15.Set “Boot Up Floppy Seek” to: Disabled
16.Set “Boot Up NumLock Status” to: Off
17.Press [Esc] then Use the arrow keys to select the “Advanced Chipset
Settings” Menu and press [Enter]
18.Set the “PEG/Onchip VGA Control” to: Auto
19. Pearl Expert: Set "Boot Display" to CRT

So I finally gained access to the BIOS.

For some reason, the keyboard acts as if the function key is held down the whole time, so the 0 key wasn't returning a 0 at all. Luckily the function key lets you use keyboard as number pad, and i finally found the 0 on the M key. I haven't been able to find a setting to change that. Oddly enough, it does NOT act this way in Titan. Normal operation all the way.

So, onto the next stumbling block. We've replaced the battery, which shouldn't have been bad on a console that's 11 months old, but maybe just a faulty one.
The BIOS on this console doesn't have menu options like those listed in the Upgrade Documentation. There is no option for advanced chipset functions. I can't find any method for changing the monitor to "option 7". it gives me some multiple resolutions, none of which seem to work with the touch wing. can anyone tell me the actual resolution of an Expert Touch?

i have located some of the values under different headings, but I'm firmly believing that it has a different BIOS than it should. The attempt to reprogram the BIOS has ended in frustration. After downloading several copies of the bios boot file, extracting to multiple USB sticks to find one that would boot, it now pops up a gigantic warning screen stating that the bios file I'm trying to update with does not match the system. At this point I stopped for fear that moving forward would result in nothing good.

Now, the console will still boot into titan, but needs activation EVERY time the console boots. of course, i seems it is always a different machine id code, so the previous temp activation codes don't work. I submitted a request for another temp code, and have gotten it running. Show programmed. hoping no one shuts off the console, and i can revisit all this in Budapest tomorrow. Perhaps with better wifi.

So, long story short on this one. What Bios is the console running? No idea. And what should it be? is it possible that the motherboard is different on this console? It is a genuine Avo Expert Pro. Should i attempt to input the filename for the bios and force it to overwrite?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Regards,

Brian

DO NOT update the firmware!

Those instructions are for the original 'non pro' Experts. The pro consoles have different motherboards and BIOS.

If someone doesn't beat me to it I'll see if I can find BIOS settings for the newer boards. But you don't need to update the firmware. IIRC this was mainly to provide the ability to use bootable recovery sticks on the older consoles when recovery moved from discs to pendrive. AFAIK the newer motherboard BIOS has this capability already. A dead battery will only lose the settings. It does not affect firmware.

The Pearl Expert Pro uses a different motherboard to the Pearl Expert which is why the settings are a bit different:
  • Under the Exit menu, select "Load Optimized Defaults" and press enter
  • Under the Security menu, set both the "Supervisor Password" and "User Password" to 68340
  • Enter the "Main" Menu, and set the correct "Date and Time"
  • in "Main", enter "Boot features", and set the NumLock to "Off"
  • In "Advanced" enter "System Agent (SA) Configuration" then select "Graphics Configuration" and finally select "IGD Configuration" and set as follows:
IGD – Boot Type to LVDS
IGD – Secondary Boot Type to CRT
IGD – LCD Panel Type to 1280 x 800 LVDS Color Panel
Panel Color Depth to 18 Bit.
  • Enter the "Advanced" menu, and then enter the "South Bridge Configuration" menu.
  • Enter the "SB PCI Express Config" menu.
  • Enter the "PCI Express Port 1" menu, and change the "ASPM" setting to "Disabled".
  • Go back to the "SB PCI Express Config" menu.
  • Enter the "PCI Express Port 2" menu, and change the "ASPM" setting to "Disabled".
  • Enter the "Boot" Menu to change the hard disk Boot Priority Order as follows:
Set the [USB HDD] to 1
Set the [USB CD] to 2
Set the [ATA HDD0] to 3
  • Disable the other devices by selecting them and pressing Shift + 1
  • Enter the "Others" Menu, and then enter the "SIO Configuration" Menu.
Set the "Powerloss / Powercontrol" setting to [Always Off]
  • Go to the Exit menu. Select "Exit Saving Changes", press Enter, then Y, then Enter.

After you have corrected the BIOS settings please check that the settings persist by turning off the console and unplugging it for a few minutes then going back into the BIOS.

The problem with the 0 key is due to Num Lock being enabled in the BIOS when it shouldn't be.

This makes much more sense now.

I will do all those things and see where it gets me tomorrow.

Will I need to re license the console with a permanent activation? Currently running on at least the second temporary right now. :)

Thank you all for your help. Much appreciated.
