Transparencies????

Can someone explain to me what is meant when someone says, I would like to program some transparencies........ I see this term used many times when programming..

In Brasil where I lived for 7 years this term was used for Record by Channel.

I expect they mean if you program a transparent colour chase, then the pan and tilt etc would be unaffected.
