Pearl Issues

My Pearl 2010 has been acting funny. It likes to get stuck in the shape generator, and has had a thing for crashing lately. I have wiped the memory and its still giving me the same issues. I am trying to make sure my desk has the most current software, and make sure what I do and don't have to install in it. The version says V1.1 January 14/2008. I am assuming the one on the downloads site that says last modified in 02/2011 would be the most current software. I am reading through the pearl 2008 upgrade procedure and the first thing it mentions is Upgrading AVOS. How quick does AVO get me the License number after I get them my console ID and Do I need to do this before I try to Upgrade the Application Software? Any help would be appreciated. I would love to finish this project today.
