Artnet system

What is the artnet system box for when patching artnet nodes? Is it anything to do with refresh rate. Also i have 6 artnet universes and 2 dmx universes running all pretty much full, the desk and touch screen are slowing down quite a bit, artnet is set to broadcast would it be better to have it set directly to the nodes, would this speed things up?
