Using mask when programming fixtures

Hi
I'm working on a show now, with a lot of different acts ( bands, dancing, theatres and so on). I will therefore want to do a lot of different stuff during the show. So I want to record one cue that controls only the dimmer attribute of my moving heads, and then other cues that controls different other stuff ( as colours, shapes, pan/tilt ).
I've tried to use the mask function when programming palettes, and then apply palettes to the fixtures I want, and then record a cue. And I've masked out the dimmer from all of the palettes. This I can do. But then, when I try to tell the table/fixtures that they are meant to only turn the dimmer to 100 %, not include pan/tilt, colour or anything else it doesn't work.
I record a cue with this palette, I fire another cue with the right position and colur(becaus I don't want the audience to see the lights changing colour and position), and then I fire the cue wich are ment to only turn the intensity up. But no, the second cue totally override the first one, turns the coulor blank, even if I told it not to mess with the coulor, and then it moves them back to the starting position.
Anyone who can tell me what I'm doing wrong? I'll be really glad:)
