I was really glad to read about the new operating system! (http://www.avolites.org.uk/avonews/pres ... lasa08.htm) But offcourse I would like to know some more details. For instance, are old Pearls going to be able to use this software or is it an Expert / 2010 only? Are the old and the new onces kind of the same in look & feel, or is the new one really totally different? I've never used a D4 so I'm a bit in the dark about how it's all going to work in the future :)

The press-release states pretty clear that this new Titan OS is targetted @ Pearl Expert & Diamond 4 consoles....

So I guess it is only compatible with PC-Motherboard-based consoles....

Which would mean that the Borris 1, 2, 3 consoles (Pearl 2000, Pearl 2004, Pearl 2008, Pearl 2010 & Pearl Tiger) will continue to live on the AVOS operating system...

Exactly. Titan will be the new unified software for Expert/D4.

As far as I am aware there is no future software development planned for other consoles, mainly because that hardware has reached its limit.

It is my understanding that the 2010 is a purely cosmetic update with the curved back to match the Expert & Tiger.

I am not in a position to give specific details of the new system yet but I will try to reassure you that it should not seem particularly different and should remain accessible to any Avo operator.
It was always the intention to incorporate the advanced features of the D4 while maintaining the familiar interface.

The D4 can seem confusing initially, but the majority of the functions work in exactly the same way as a Pearl. Some buttons are in different places and, although there are significantly more, many don't actually have a function!

I highly recommend downloading the D4 software and running it on your PC. Via the Virtual Panel and Vis you can quickly get an idea of the similarities and differences.

Ok thanks, guess I didnt read the article too well :) So pratically, the 2000, 2004, 2008 and 2010 consoles are all kind off the same apart from having some minor hardware differences like USB and such? And the Expert is the only really 'new' Pearl which has different hardware and will run the new Titan OS?

I don't really get the point of launching a new platform and continuing to facelift the old one so it looks like the new one but really isn't :? .

Correct. 2004 on have better playback/master faders. 2008 on & Tiger have USB.

I agree about facelift but it's no big deal either. If you're buying a new Pearl then you get one that looks a bit more modern, that's all.

I have said before that ideally the Tiger or something similar should be developed on the same hardware base as the Expert. This would then give three control surface levels all capable of running the same software.

That would make more sense to mee too. And for the cosmetics; I understand that all of the consoles should look alike, but it's even more confusing when a desk looks quite similar to another desk but has different software on it. Oh well, I'll manage anyhow, but it's good to know there are no technical reasons to buy a 2010 instead of a 2008 (which is a good thing since the price of the 2008 will drop when the 2010 arrives).

The 2010 is a direct replacement for the 2008 so the price will not be dropping I am afraid.

Does anybody know when this will be available? I'm rather excited!

When it's ready?! (standard response for software...)

Obviously it's great that you are excited about it. Maybe Olie will give a date but I think is best not to just in case. Better to be pleasantly surprised than disappointed?

The standard response for software is: when it compiles! :)

I will tell you as long as you keep it to yourself and do not tell anyone else.

The release date for the Titan Pearl Expert software will be the end of September. You will be able to see a slightly cut down version at this years PLASA.
