At present there is no way to select the channels that the effects engine runs across, so it will only mix white using the RGB channels and not change the white channel. Not sure if it is any use to you but you could patch a separate dimmer fixture where the white channel would be and run effects over that.

You can set each layer in a pixel map effect to Use Master then the colour will come from the corresponding layer master. The layer masters can be assigned by going to System mode, selecting Assign Masters > Pixel Mapper and selecting the required layers. You can change the colour of the layer master on the attribute wheels, by creating and recalling palettes or from playbacks. Please note that as well as colour the master will also control other properties such as Zoom or Intensity, in particular ensure that you set the intensity to full.

To expand on that, the pixel map masters work like a normal fixture. So you can also store and use colour palettes to busk effects, including timed recalls etc.
