External Touchscreen for Tiger Touch

Postby Quidam » 17 Apr 2014, 19:13

Hello everyone,

(I originally posted this at the bottom of this post but, as the title was not relevant, here's a new topic...)

I'm looking for an external touchscreen for my Tiger Touch II, and I'm a bit puzzled...

The best touchscreens to use would be those designed to work with Windows Touch which was introduced with Windows 7. Such touchscreens will work without having to install any additional drivers and the configuration tools ('Tablet PC Setup' and 'Pen and Touch') are included in Control Panel on the consoles.

Unfortunately, this is not really helpful for me now, as screens aren't advertised this way anymore :-)
As there is only a VGA out on my desk, and no digital output, I assume I have to go for a screen supporting a USB dedicated connection for the touch function.
I could go for 'trusted' solutions like old ELO or iiyama screens but, then again, I'm lost in all different models/technologies (capacitive, resistive, infrared, saw, blablabla...).
Any suggestions ?

Also, these are not the most cost effective solution anymore, and I would be glad to be able to use the monitor for other devices/applications. But...

Please know that multitouch doesn't work.

Just to be sure : this does not rule out 'modern' multitouch screens (as soon as they also support VGA+USB - is it a common thing ?) but I most probably will have to install dedicated drivers (win7 version) on the desk. Correct ?
Can it be safely done ?
If not, is there any tested drivers and/or updated drivers in the latest Titan build ?

Which touchscreens are you successfully using on TT or Pearl Exp ?

Modern Multitouch screens work well without any drivers. Old touch screens (ELO, etc...) need a driver to work and thus are not plug and play in TT.

Yes, you should use a screen with a VGA input for the monitor and USB for the touch sensor.

The main two options are resistive and capacitive:
  • Resistive sensors respond to pressure on the screen to move and click the mouse, you can therefore use any object to act as a stylus e.g. pen, pencil, end of a Sharpie. These screens often require more than just a light touch to activate which some people prefer as it avoids accidental touches when your hand is close to the screen for example waiting for a cue. This is the type of touch screen used in most of the Avolites products.
  • Capacitive sensors respond to the capacitance change caused by fingers on or close to the surface of the screen. These require a much lighter touch to use but depending on your preference may be too sensitive. These screens are the same technology that is used in most touch screen phones and must be used with a finger or specialised stylus. The Tiger Touch II and TitanNet Processors use capacitive screens.
  • Both Infra-red and SAW transmit a signal across the surface of the screen and detect when this signal is broken by an object, such as a finger. The former uses Infra-red light and the latter uses an ultrasonic sound wave. These screens tend to be even more sensitive than capacitive screens and will work with any stylus.

Please know that multitouch doesn't work.

To clarify, a multi-touch screen should work however you will only be able to touch in one place at a time.

We do not recommend installing drivers or software on Avolites consoles as this has the potential to make the console unstable or even crash. If you do choose to do so, I would suggest that you test the console thoroughly before using on a show and be aware that if you do have any problems you may need to run a recovery stick to return the console to normal. This is why we recommend using screens that use Windows built in drivers. There are some drivers installed for the touch screens used in the consoles and these do get updated in newer recovery sticks, so there is a slim chance that if you install the latest recovery stick it will have the drivers that you need.

At trade shows and similar we have used the consoles with iiyama ProLite T1731SR-1 monitors which are 17" 4:3 resistive touch screens. The consoles include drivers for these screens and should also work with the 15" and 19" models.
