Pearl 2000/2004 MIDI test

Hi
I am testing my Pearl for MIDI so i can use it with vis using a RS232 lead however when i check the console using a standard MIDI cable connected between in & out, as suggested in the help sheet, the screen displays 5a in yellow but not in white as suggested.

Is there something wrong with the console or a setting I have missed?
Any help much appreciated.
