Key frame shape snapping off not smooth fade out

this is specific to PT effects. When I save a regular shape to a playback, It turns on and off smoothly with (fade in) and (fade out) or (release time). But when I do the exact same thing with a keyframe shape, it generally fades in smooth, but fades out with a snap. I've tried a ton of different things but can't kill the effect smoothly. any ideas?
