getting started with Titan PC suit

I have registered, downloaded and installed Titan PC Suit. When it first started it prompted me to register - enter username again.
Is this a simulator of the Avolites consoles? that is can I use it to learn the console and program a show file offline? Or do I need some hardware (Titan One dongle or whatever) to get it to do anything useful?
I have loaded the Tiger Touch panel in the virtual panel, but it doesn't seem to do much - I can move the faders and when I click Patch button the red light comes on but clicking on Fixture or Dimmer doesn't do anything. The display part is blank. Pressing Fixture does not do anything, although the button seems to depress.
I have another window, 'touch display' all in grey, in which I managed to get into patch mode, search for fixtures (Martin-Viper) and patch them but now can't seem to get out of patch mode back to some sort of "live" mode.
The manual mentions pressing the Locate button to control fixtures - but I can see that in the 'touch display' window and in the tiger touch panel it does not do anything.
I have used an actual Tiger Touch console once before but this PC software has me really confused as to how its supposed to work. Any clues or pointers to getting started documentation would be welcome - thanks.
Hardware is Dell XPS 13 running Windows 10 Build 16299
