What is the difference between the older type encoder and the newer optical type in operation. what can one do the other can't?

Forgot to ask in the previous post, I'm also getting a full list of bus errors, "VIDEO af476" and "VIDEO af5b6". Don't have a video card installed, any ideas what's causing them?

fader bleed problem

I'm servicing an old pearl (prl069) for a client, having changed about 50 of the faders I'm finding on preset faders 21 when you bring it up full channel 22 seems to bleed up to about 10% and when you do the opposite, bring up channel 22 to full 21 goes to about 10%. Likewise on the two faders above...
